In yesterday’s Gospel reading, we heard Jesus’ declaration: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). So much about life is different, even uncertain. But the truth of the matter is this: Jesus Christ is still your Lord and Savior. His Cross has conquered sin, the devil, and even the grave! The unique opportunity of this time is to be aware of God’s blessings and revel in the abundant life that Christ has offered to us.
This fall, I encourage you to be fully present and fully aware to God’s Spirit in your life. Note the places where Christ’s kingdom is breaking in beyond the clouds and shadows of this life. The freedom of faith grants us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate life in all of its weird and glorious ways! Life is abundant in the company of family gathered around the table to taste good food. Life is abundant when we reach out to our shut-in and homebound members. Life is abundant as our school children make meaningful connections with new teachers and fellow students. Of course, life is abundant when we hear God’s Word, share in fellowship, receive the Sacrament, and grow in faith, love, and obedience to God’s will. Look all around you: Life is abundant! Yes, maybe especially now!
