On Sunday, Pastor Bob Mortvedt and I had a really good laugh when I jokingly said: “I am really looking forward to Advent! It will probably slow down in comparison to October!” Shortly after that visit, this picture popped up on my Facebook feed. Its beautiful simplicity and clear message stopped me in my tracks. It has been a busy fall with many griefs to bear. When we picked up our tree on Friday with no snow on the ground, four days before my dad’s birthday, and still a week and two days until the start of Advent…I felt like we were trying to rush into the season just a bit quicker than I was ready.
If Advent and Christmas are a burden, then we’ve missed the whole point. If there are certain schedules you have to keep and certain rules you have to follow about trees and cooking baking and what to wear and present giving (and present receiving), then, I hate to say it: You’re probably doing it wrong! Because Christmas, like every Sunday and every service of God’s House, is really about Jesus Christ the King, who came to save us. He did it because of his great love for us. So go ahead and do everything or none of it on your own time schedule! Thanks to Jesus, the month ahead was never meant to be a burden.
Thanks be to God!
