Yesterday afternoon, both of our kids started hiccupping. Meg and I have come to know that is a sign of tiredness and exhaustion. It’s no surprise…we’ve been going-going-going the last several weeks; and as much as we try to coax for naps, our kids are too big, too cool, “just can’t fall asleep” or “aren’t tired” for naps…Come to think of it, I’m not sure they’re our kids ;o) So instead of demanding naps, we do what we can to speed along the coming of bedtime.
On Monday night, in my continuing education course, Dr. Nestingen pointed out what God’s Spirit does to get us what we need. The Spirit uses the means of grace: The Word and the preaching of it, Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and the near-sacrament of Absolution. The means of grace are the instruments the Spirit uses to keep us in unity with the whole Christian church on earth and in the one true faith with the Lord Jesus Christ. While we might come up with every excuse or remain obstinate, even opposed to God’s means, this is what we need from God and God is faithful to give us what we need. Have you been feeling the nudge? Have you felt the Spirit churning a hunger in your heart and soul. You might as well give in and get in front of God’s means of grace. It will save your life…now and onto eternity.
Lenten Blessings,
Pastor Culynn
