The Bethel Series — Is this Bible Study worth your time?
Absolutely!! Despite my years of education, it is the single most
enlightening and important learning experience I have ever had.
I grew up with Bible stories in the home and gospel readings in church.
But these were all disconnected stories. “The Bible is not meant to be read
from cover to cover,” I was told. Why then did it have two covers? Why were
the books arranged in the order that they were? There had to be some logic
to it. So in 2011, I read a study Bible from cover to cover. I read every word,
note, summary and explanation. It took me over seven months, but lo and
behold, I learned that there actually is a coherent story that flows from
cover to cover! I felt that I had gained an understanding of the Bible and a
greater appreciation of God’s covenant of old with his chosen people and
the need for a new covenant in the body and blood of Jesus Christ if we are
truly to be saved from our original and ongoing sin.
Then along came the Bethel Series opportunity. I thought this might
reaffirm and refresh what I had learned on my own. Was I ever wrong! The
Bethel Series taught me that I had learned little to nothing on my own about
the real nature of God’s plan for his people of the Old Testament and God’s
plan for the world in the fullness of time. I learned so much more through
the Bethel Series and under the tutelage and expert guidance of Pastor
Culynn. I feel as though I read the Bible with my eyes open for the first time!
For the first year Old Testament study, the Bethel Series’ use of themes
such as Divine Intentions, Disharmony, and Pronouncement of a Destiny,
were excellent at guiding the study and my understanding of the text—not
just the history, but the purpose behind all that was experienced by God’s
chosen people. The beautiful artistry in each lesson’s painting was a superb
shorthand way to drive the lesson home and commit the lessons to memory
and to heart.
For the second year New Testament study, the Bethel Series had
superb lessons on The Fullness of Time and of course on Jesus—the Man,
the Teacher, the Spokesman to Distortion and the Savior. The Series also
grouped the New Testament readings by like subjects and themes. To study
the Bible in this manner made it so much more meaningful and memorable.
But it was the teaching in the difficult Holy Spirit-led subjects that were
particularly enlightening, subjects such as Faith, Justification, Sanctification
and Revelation. These difficult concepts suddenly became accessible.
Of course, you can learn more about it from Pastor Culynn, but stop me
at church or call anytime if you have questions or want to hear more from a
former student.
