On the eve of Thanksgiving Day, as I knead the dough for what will become our dinner rolls for tomorrow’s feast, it provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many blessings that God has poured into and worked into my life: “For breath and body, food and clothing, work and income, home and family; for good government and seasonable weather, peace and health, a good reputation, true friends and neighbors” (adapted from Luther’s Small Catechism explanation on “Daily Bread” in the Lord’s Prayer).
Surely the list is not exhaustive and depending on the circumstances of life, we are extra mindful of God’s providence. And while Luther’s reflection goes right to daily life, today, I also give thanks for the gift of our faith community. In talking with another member: Our staff, our building, our budget, our fellowship, our study, our people and friendships, an endowment, the heart of our message and ministry–Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection for our salvation–and countless other hidden gifts; it is an embarrassment of riches.
With grateful hearts, we give God all thanks and praise!
A Blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours,
Pastor Culynn
