Last year for Epiphany, we participated in an ancient ritual of “Chalking the Doors.” We asked that in the Year 2020, “Christ would bless our mansion/Christ bless this house.” On March 15, 2020, as I was getting ready to leave, that blue blessing reminded me that God was still with us, totally present and a very present help in time of trouble. Like the blood of the lamb on the lintels and doorposts of God’s house, I have been reminded of God’s protection because of this visual. That blue-chalk-blessing has been a constant blessing to me this year.
I have attached the Service Rite below, so that you can do this with your family in your home. Typically, it is done on January 6, in conjunction with the Feast of the Kings/Epiphany. As you chalk the doors at your home, it becomes a great conversation point with friends and neighbors. But also, it reminds us of that old saying, “We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.”
New Year Blessings to you!
