Dear Friends in Christ…

On Wednesday, we observed the Festival of Epiphany, the visitation of the Magi. According to Matthew 2, these wisemen from the east followed a star westward to find the Christ child in a tiny, little town on the outskirts of the Roman Empire.
I am not one for believing in signs; I find that too quickly I’ll descend into a rabbit hole of possible meanings and probably miss out on its intended purpose. So it goes. However, the Feast of Epiphany makes it clear that a star fell out of its courses and led the Magi unequivocally to the Christ child. In my favorite Epiphany hymn, the final stanza promises similar results:

As a star God’s Holy Word,
Leads us to our King and Lord;
Brightly from its sacred pages
Shall this light throughout the ages
Shine upon our path of life.

If you’re looking for a sign to guide you, hoping for clarity as you discern the future, or you need a promise of God’s presence, his power, and his peace, then look no further than the Word of God written on the pages of the Bible. Just as the hymn suggests, the light of the Word guides us directly to Jesus, our Savior and Lord.

Happy New Year!
